Frequently Asked Questions

I am pregnant and do not know what to do?

If you think you may be pregnant due to having done a pregnancy test which shows a positive result, or else you are experiencing some of the possible symptoms of pregnancy (sore breasts, nausea, missed period) you can come and see our doctor or women’s health nurse who will confirm it with another pregnancy test (urine test or blood test). They will ask when your last period was and work out how many weeks pregnant you are. You will then be offered “Pregnancy options” counselling, which is a non-judgmental discussion of all the options available to a pregnant woman. For example, continuing the pregnancy and keeping the baby, continuing the pregnancy and fostering out or adoption options, or having a termination of the pregnancy. You can talk about your feelings, your fears and worries or whatever concerns or issues you would like to talk about. A special questionnaire can sometimes be helpful for the woman to take away and complete such as the one by Children by Choice which will prompt you to think about everything that may be happening in your life at the moment, and may help you make your decision about what you want to do. If you still feel undecided, you can book an appointment with the generalist counsellor who can go into more depth with you about any uncertainty you still feel.

You can also read the pregnancy options information on a website called Reachout
or the Family Planning NSW website and using the search window (type in pregnancy options)

Women of all ages should always have a place that is safe for them, and for which their needs are the focus. There are so many different issues that are unique to women and girls. Why do other people have counselling?

People come to see a counsellor for all sorts of reasons. Some people have problems relaxing, while others have experienced childhood trauma, or adult trauma. Some people need help managing their angry feelings, whilst others are feeling very sad and lonely. Some people are in difficult relationships, whilst others are finding it hard to adjust to changes in their life. Some people come to see a counsellor because they are suffering from shyness, or because they are confused about events or feelings.
