Stalking can be described as a series of acts that are intended to, or in fact do, cause harassment to another person. Stalking can have a devastating effect of the lives of victims who are subjected to constant harassment at home, in public places and at work. The Bureau of Crime Statistics Women’s Safety Survey (1996) reported 15% of all women over the age of 18 had been stalked by a man at some stage of their life. It has further been reported that 6.8% of men have been stalked during their lifetime.
On Friday, 6 March 2009, The Central West Women’s Health Centre held a very successful state wide conference on ‘Stalking’. The conference brought together experts in the field of Stalking, and was open to service providers and the general public.
Speaking at the conference was our keynote speaker Mr David Vaile, Executor Director of the Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre, University of New South Wales. David Vaile presented the latest research and laws relating to Cyberstalking. Other speakers included Ms Fiona Gray, Solicitor, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions who presented on ‘prosecuting stalking cases’ and Dr Shaunagh Foy, a Forensic Psychologist who covered the topic of profiling perpetrators. Dr Diane Westerhius, Lecturer, Justice Studies at Charles Sturt University presented on victimology.
Thank you to all speakers for their informative and interesting presentations. The day was fully enjoyed by all.
